A family is spending a hot summer evening at the cottage. The grandmother watches a TV that doesn't work on and off. Her daughter and son-in-law are preparing for a village party. His latest victim is American girl Mona Chepstow (Mary Ellis), whom Baroundi treats like dirt and makes her like it. The plot centers around a murder by poison, as evidenced by the film's deliberately exotic title. Critics in 1934 praised newcomer Mary Ellis for underplaying her role, but many film fans preferred Nazimova's arm-waving histrionics in the earlier version.

Tv show host Donna Gérbage lives with the unfortunate ability to see threatening messages in everything she reads from an unknown entity that wants to harm her. She ignores the issue until it affects the premiere of her sketch comedy show Trash Tv. So, she seeks the help of a mysterious eye doctor, who inadvertently makes things worse.
